OSCE Representative for Media Freedom Dunia Mijatovich expressed concern with the lately frequented facts of violation against journalists in Georgia and called on the law enforcers to investigate the given incidents. The coinciding statement was circulated by the OSCE on 16 July.
“Journalists must have freedom to work despite the political affiliation of their media outlet. It is the responsibility of law enforcers to insure professional activity of media workers without violence against them,” Mijatovich states.
The statement reads that ten journalists have been injured during the incident that took place during the meeting in Karaleti on 12 July. Among the injured were the journalists of news agency Info 9, TV-Companies 9th Channel and Trialeti and Shida Kartli Information Center.
The analogous incident took place in Mereti village 27 June when journalists of Info 9 and the 9th Channel were injured. Info 9 and Trialeti journalists state that they have been physically and verbally abused during the two months when they were covering publicly interesting events in Shida Kartli region.
Mijatovich stressed that in May she reported to government about other facts of violence against journalists: “I am concerned with such incidents and hope that the law enforcers will take all possible measures for stopping the given alarming tendency.”
Mijatovich hopes that the Court decision on putting lien on 10 thousand satellite antennas of Maestro TV will not have negative affect on the right of viewers to freely receive information.
