President and Government have agreed on three candidates to membership of the Georgian National Communications Commission (GNCC). Parliamentary Secretary of Government Shalva Tadumadze told Media.ge that from 23 candidates participating in the competition they have selected Vakhtang Abadhize, Khatuna Maisashvili and Vakhtang Khundadze. All three of them are journalists by profession.
Vakhtang (Vato) Abashidze - During 2000-2004 was member and first Chairman of the GNCC. Before that he headed President Eduard Shevardnadze’s press-service. During 2005-2006 he was a Consultant at the World Bank Project - Development of Rural Telephone Strategy and Implementation of a Pilot Plan in the Caucasus. During next several years he worked at the same position at United Telecom. Since 2012 until present Vakhtang Abashidze works as Chairman of Tender Commission and Head of Operator Relations Service at Silknet J-SC. He is also Director and owner of 50% of Optima Management LLC.
Khatuna Maisashvili – Has been granted Ph.D degree in mass communications in Ilia State University; is an invited lecturer in journalism at Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University. In addition she is working at media and communications terminology explanatory dictionary; has been founder of newspaper 7 Days. Since December 2012 she works as analyst at the State Chancellery.
Vakhtang Khundadze – He is a candidate nominated by the Creative Union of Georgian Journalists. Khundadze, born 1949, is Director of the creative union Gantiadi, President of Georgian TV-Academy NGO and head of website – Georgian Architectural Monuments in Internet. He has worked at different positions in Georgian State Television and Radio (Chief Editor and acting Chairman).
According to Shalva Tadumadze, list of selected candidates will be sent to President 20 February after which they will be nominated to Parliament for approval. Within 2 weeks after President nominates candidates Parliament approves GNCC members.
Aside from the selected three candidates following applicants participated in the competition: Natia Kuprashvili, Lia Mukhashavria, Boris Janjalia, Giorgi KHonelia, David Tutberidze, Merab Katamadze, Teimraz Berianidze, David Tsivtsivadze, Vakhtang Gegelia, Tariel Gvalia, Mamuka Lobzhanidze, David Tsintsadze, Bezhan Kharebashvili, Archil Dzidziguri, Giorgi Nachkebia, Giorgi Leonidze, Sopio Khorguani, Mikheil Gotoshia, Avtandil Tsagareishvili and Avtandil Kakhniashvili.
Position of member of GNCC became vacant after Irakli Chikovani resigned in July 2013. Competition failed two times; first President-nominated candidates (Giorgi Choladze, David Tutberidze, Teimuraz Gogoberidze) were not approved by Parliament and after candidates Otar Patarkalashvili, Giorgi Choladze and miron Chigogidze withdrew their candidatures.
