Luxemburg has hosted SES Industry Days, where world’s leading satellite operator SES, together with its partners Harmonics and Broadcom Corporation carried out the transmission of the first Ultra HD signal by HEVC standard, via ASTRA satellite(19,2° E). Compared with the standard MPEG-4, HEVC is 50% more efficient.
DVB-S2 satellite communication standard has been used for the transmission of the Ultra HD signal at the 20 Mb/sec rate.
According to the company representatives, this was the first live video-transmission of Ultra HD(3840 x 2160 pixels) by HEVC standard, while previously only H.264 had been used. Having carried out the first transmission of Ultra HD, SES once again managed to maintain its leading position in the industry. We believe that the HEVC standard will be in demand by the Ultra HD TV-operators, and we’re expecting to have Ultra HD receivers in the next few months. With the given initiative, SES is going to dramatically increase the Ultra HD ecosystem and propose its partner companies a channel in the 24/7 test mode”- SES Vice-President Thomas Wrede has declared.
HEVC decoders( based on Broadcom BCM 7445 integral decoder) and Harmonic ProMedia Xpress transcoder have been used in order to demonstrate the abilities of Ultra HD signal.
