Freedom House to be Headed by Former Assistant Secretary of State
On August 31 Freedom House announced that David J. Kramer, former Assistant Secretary of State has been chosen to serve as the organization's new executive director. Kramer will take over his term on October 4.
Kramer has had a distinguished career both in government and in the nongovernmental sector. He served as Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor from March 2008 to January 2009. He previously served for three years as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, focusing on Russia, Moldova, Belarus and Ukraine, in addition to regional non-proliferation issues. His experience in the nongovernmental sector includes his current position as a Senior Transatlantic Fellow at the German Marshall Fund of the United States, as well as a five-year tenure at the Carnegie Endowment, where he was associate director of the Russian and Eurasian Program.
On May 15, 2010 David Kramer wrote in the Washington Post criticizing US President Barack Obama having declared that the situation in Georgia "need no longer be considered an obstacle to proceeding" US-Russian relations.
Based in 1941 Freedom House is an independent watchdog organization that supports the expansion of freedom around the world. Freedom House supports democratic change, monitors freedom, and advocates for democracy and human rights.
