Call for Applications
WAN-IFRA, in association with IREX Europe, who together provide unrivalled global expertise in developing and delivering business solutions for publishers, invite you to participate in the WAN-IFRA World Editors Forum (WEF) within its Better Management and Business Development for Independent Media Component of the EU-funded 2010 - 2011 Media Strengthening Programme for Georgia (MSPG).
The Programme and the WAN-IFRA World Editors Forum
The Media Strengthening Programme for Georgia aims to advance the independent media's role in consolidating democratization in Georgia through more effective media freedom advocacy, greater professionalism in media management and journalism, and the application of new media technologies.
The WAN-IFRA World Editors Forum (WEF) undertakes a number of activities to provide premium service to benefit editors and senior newsroom executives from around the world, throughout the year, in the form of reports, events and Study Tours.
2010 is the year some digital activities, like Webinars, E-Consulting for Editors, were added to allow professionals to keep on with up-to-date practices and policies.
For more information about the 2010 WEF please go to http://www.wefhamburg2010.com/articles.php?id=258#
When and where?
October 6-8, 2010, Hamburg, Germany
Who can benefit?
Six top managers/publishers/editors of the Tbilisi based and regional newspapers/magazines will be selected as a result of this application.
What topics will the 2010 WEF focus on?
- News reading devices: it is not yet certain if tablets, e-readers and smart phones will be mass or niche products, but they will allow to monetize news content per article or via new distribution methods. How will these new devices impact news reporting? - Link & share: newsrooms must embrace the new flow of information and adapt to fragmented audiences. They have to direct their readers elsewhere as a way to provide more comprehensive coverage. - Cooperation: news organizations will have to be prepared to act as partners, rather than just competitors. This is a huge shift in editors' mindsets and it will take time... but hopefully not too much if newspapers want to survive.
Logistics:
All expenses related to the visit will be covered by the Media Strengthening Programme for Georgia. The programme staff will assist the winners with logistics related to obtaining visas, booking flights, registration and lodging.
How to apply?
Those wishing to apply should provide information about their media outlets:
-Type
-Size (circulation, page number, frequency)
-Short history
And an essay (maximum 1,000 words) stating:
-Motivation for application
-What values are pursued by the applicant media outlet
-How the motivation for application fits into the 2010 WEF context
