In 2015 Geogia must switch to digital broadcasting meaning that along with broadcasters the consumers will also face changes. You may have to purchase an additional device, or change your TV-set in order to see the TV-image in 2015. Although, you may even receive the digital signal without any changes; it depends on what kind of TV-set you have and what type of broadcast you receive.

Billionaire BidzinaIvanishvili’s Public movement Georgian Dream has paid GEL 4 thousand as salary to LashaShonia, Company Igrika General Director. Igrika has been founded by Ilia (Bacho) Kikabidze, Maestro TV Director General. On September 9 2011 Igrika obtained license for broadcasting via cable network and on December 23 2011 the National Communications Commission also granted it the right of satellite broadcasting. At that time Kikabidze told media.ge that negotiations with certain partners were underway and he was planning to launch two TV channels.

Unclear Future of ‘Jikha’ and ‘Kolkheti’
In 2011 Samegrelo TV-company Jikha (Tsalenjikha) was reformed into a studio and Kolkheti-89 (Chkhorotskhu) into an information center. Both TV-companies are managed by the family of Zugdidi Municipality Governor. In May this year the Media Center for Open Abkhazia purchased the broadcasting licenses of these two TV-companies and launched reorganization. Still, neither the TVs, nor the new owner of their licenses have a precise development plan yet.

The overreaching goal of the organization will be to set up and develop new distribution network. The Free Press Support Organization was founded on December 13, 2011 by the Georgian Press Association. Since 2009 the publishers of Georgian newspapers such as Rezonansi, Kviris Palitra and Asaval-Dasavali have been the founders of the Georgian Press Association.

Tedo Kobakhidze, lawyer of Guria TV company founder Merab Sioridze alleges pressure by the authorities. Speaking at the December 15 briefing Tedo Kobakhidze accused the Supreme Court of illegal judgment and the opposing party of falsifying case-relates material.
The December 5 Supreme Court decision is being concerned. According to the ruling Merab Sioridze has been deprived a right to hold 100 percent of shares handed over to Marina Vasilieva, Director of Krona Ltd. The latter receded her share in favor of Malkhaz Sabadze.

Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development is to start developing the strategy of switchover to digital broadcasting, with support from the European Bank of Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). This was announced at the Conference opened in Tbilisi Sheraton Metechi Palace Hotel on December 8.
The Conference is organized framework of the multi-month technical assistance program: “Georgia: Infocommunication Policy and Regulatory Development.”

Switchover to digital broadcasting – the process where journalists’ involvement and correct reporting are essential factors. On December 2-3 Internews Georgia organized training on the given issue for Tbilisi-based and regional media representatives.
On the first day of training twenty journalists participating in the training gained theoretical knowledge about digital broadcasting from media expert David Mikautadze.

On November 29 journalists, media owners, NGO representatives and policy makers held a rally at the premises of Tbilisi City Hall to protest the auction for the lots apportioned for trading booths.
Through a silent rally up to 200 people demanded the termination of the auction and the interests of press distributors and publishers to be taken into account. The individuals working in the newsagent kiosks until their removal joined the rally.

On November 29 in front of the Tbilisi Municipality representatives of printed media will hold a protest rally due to non-consideration of the interests of publishers and press distributors when announcing auction on allocation of trading booths in Tbilisi streets.
“All of you who love newspapers, books and magazines are invited to the theatrical rally Tuesday. Bring your favorite newspapers with you and let’s all show them to Saakashvili and Ugulava… Hand off Georgian printed media!” Eliso Chapidze, editor of one of the leading daily newspapers Resonance wrote in her Facebook post.
