President of Georgia Proposes Tax Amnesty to Regional TVs

Reporting to the Parliament on February 26 President Mikheil Saakashvili proposed MPs a tax amnesty for regional TVs.

Speaking at the plenary session Mikheil Saakashvili said he is going to grant amnesty to each Georgian regional TV "so that they could develop, and contribute to the formation of political culture and democracy."

In addition discussing the Batumi-based Channel 25 President pointed out that the arrears of the TV company will be conversed too notwithstanding its critical tone towards the authorities.

For a few years now Channel 25 has been conducting a dispute with tax services for the arrears accumulated throughout recent years. The TV company recognizes GEL 70,000 arrear only but in total the company has been charged with up to GEL 300,000.

According to Natia Kuprashvili, Executive Director, Georgian Association of Regional Broadcasters the tax amnesty is going to solve numerous problems the regional broadcasters face.

"TVs got into arrears, some in an artificial way, yet in the course of Eduard Shevardnadzes' presidency, and it was a strong lever of pressure," Natia Kuprashvili pointed out.
